Meet Our Team

The core team behind Seed & Spirit have been working together in various industries for over a decade, and have known each other for at least 4 lifetimes now. This crew of goof balls are pretty serious about whiskey made in Colorado, and it shows in every detail of our company.

JOEL GUSTAFSON

Founder / CEO

Joel has managed the Operations department for the past 10 years from event production to small scale permaculture farming. As an entrepreneur and trained culinary chef, Joel brings an unstoppable force of passion and knowledge for producing fine spirits.

Fun Fact: Joel won the ‘Most Improved Bowler’ participation award at the age of 12, a trophy only awarded once in the history of his hometown youth bowling league.

JESS GRIES

Attorney / Administrative Director

Jess has practiced law in Colorado for twenty years, focusing on the music and events industries since 2005. Jess’ firm, Gries Law, P.C. He is also the President of the non-profit Leave A Positive Legacy. He will be instrumental with the permitting and licensing process in bringing our spirits to market.

JUSTIN BROTHERS

Administrative Manager – Lead Packaging Coordinator

Justin Brothers has been a driving force in the Northern Colorado packaging and bottling industry. He has successfully started his own organic packaging company and product line in Fort Collins, CO. He brings to the team an inherent knowledge of the industry, vast array of contacts and resources, a deep understanding of equipment and production standards. He will be an intricate part of the Seed & Spirit branding, bottling, packaging and eventual rollout of the organic product line of spirits.

PAUL FRANZEN

Malt House Production

In the past 20 years, Paul has held a multitude of roles in the realm of production. He will be a key part of launching the Malthouse and Aging Yard. When not on site, he enjoys playing with his two boys and dogs and spending time with his lovely wife.

Fun Fact: Sometime in the 2000’s Paul was on tour with John Prine, whom Hunter S Thompson wanted to meet after his gig in Aspen.  Well, needless to say, John didn’t stick around too long but Paul successfully closed the bar with Hunter and his wife.  Stranger days were ahead for both of them…

JOHN MOTLEY

Distillery & Malting Production – Coopering

Craftsman and builder by trade, John has spent the last decade timber framing homes and creating custom art work. For him the cooperage is a blending of these skills. John has a background in environmental science and strives to achieve sustainability. He looks forward to moving this company towards a carbon neutral future.

Fun Fact: John once lost his un named hostel while traveling in Peru only to find it by giving up looking, ending up in a bar where the bar tender recognizing him from the hostel where he worked his day job. All who wonder while wandering are not lost… apparently.

Mike Goveia

Tasting Room General Manager, Mixologist & Artist

Mike’s love of using flavors to create experiences started in a hot commercial kitchen in college. When he moved to the bar side, he took a lot of the skills and ingredients used in the kitchen to develop an impressive mixologist career. The love of cooking and creating unique flavors fueled the fire to become a trend setting and highly skilled front of house Manager. He is now bringing those talents to Seed & Spirit to showcase the most unique spirits a distillery has come out of the gates with.

Fun fact: Mike worked for the Crown Prince of Dubai for 7 years filming a documentary all around the world. The more drinks he has the better the stories get.

Jordan Dean

Marketing Manager & Graphic Designer

Jordan has been doing art & graphic design since he was a kid. He has worked as a graphic designer, Art Director, and Creative Director for many years—gaining expert skills in all forms of marketing & design. In addition to illustration & design, he also is an accomplished mural artist.

Fun fact: Jordan still plays basketball in a rec league even though he should be retired from that nonsense.
